For GMs

Want to be an SNSO Game Master?
Want to run an SNSO game? Come lead a party to certain doom! We're always looking for more game masters to expand our galactic empire.

What does SNSO provide?

We'll handle promotion of your game as part of Saturday Night Space Opera, to help you attract players. This means adding you to our schedule of events, here on our website and broadcasting through various social media platforms (Facebook Instagram, etc.). The signal gets a boost at the Source with flyers in the store, on their weekly e-newsletter, and on their events calendar.

The night of your game, we typically provide:
  • A table sign so players can find you.
  • Specially designed tabletop name tags so you and your players get to know one another.
  • Extra pencils.
  • Hand sanitizer.

Will there be food?

Saturday Night Space Opera does not provide refreshments. However, the Source will allow outside food from nearby restaurants (but no alcohol). They also have snacks and beverages. On the occasions that we're at Fantasy Flight Games, they have a bar and grill. All participants are expected to follow facility rules and behave accordingly.

What do you suggest for my first game?

For your first game, you'll want to make it as easy as possible for players to dive right in. We highly recommend you run a one-shot adventure that can be played start-to-finish. If players want more, you're always free to continue with a campaign. But we've learned in our own SNSO games that players really want a gratifying game experience the first time out and that'll keep them coming back for more.

How much time will I get to run my game?

We have a standing reservation with the Source 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the second Saturday of every month (barring some holidays). Don't be fooled: it's not as short as it seems--we pack a lot into those hours! We also schedule games at Tower Games and Fantasy Flight Games, which each have their own hours of operation. Much of our scheduling and promotion is done through our Facebook page. We recommend you join there to keep up with the RSVP activity and other announcements.

What time should I come?

We advertise a start time of 6:00 p.m. Generally, there's introductions and set up and the game begins no later than 6:30 p.m. Still, game masters are expected to be at the table and prepared to run the game by the start time. Plan on setting up 20-30 minutes before the advertised time (so, 5:40 p.m. for a 6:00 p.m. start time), just to be safe.

What should I bring?

Game masters are expected to bring everything needed to play. Including:
  • Game manuals - we recommend you bring your own GM book and at least one for players to pass around. Quick start packets for players (by you or a publisher) are also great and save a lot of time.
  • Character sheets (see below).
  • Accessories like dice, tokens, miniatures (if needed).
  • Enough writing materials for all players (pencils, pens, scratch paper).
Those running tabletop games are expected to bring all board or card game materials need to play (all pieces, expansions, etc.). You'll need to let us know ahead of time how many players your game can accommodate so we don't under- or over- book availability.

Will there be time for players to create characters from scratch?

We've had a lot of luck with pre-generated characters at previous games. You don't have to flesh out fully formed player characters, but templates are a great way to get players quickly engaged, while still allowing for some customization.

If you have enough players already committed to an upcoming campaign, feel free to do a session of character generation! We just want your game to be successful and we've found pregens are the best way to go.
